Reading

Reading
I began reading at a very young age, and was reading as best I could by the time I started kindergarten.  I also read for a living, as an English professor.  If you would have told 13-year-old me that I could make a career out of reading and writing, I would have cried with joy.  And I did!
I love my job, and writing novels is just a bonus.

My tastes are wide and varied.  I love eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novels, seventeenth-century drama, twenty-first century young adult and sci fi/fantasy, mysteries of every era, the gothic novel, Romantic poetry, pretty much everything but Westerns and really hard sci fi.

Some of my favorite writers include:
Connie Willis, Jim Butcher, Tana French, Rainbow Rowell, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte Bronte, Wilkie Collins, Stephen King, NK Jemisin, Joe Hill, Gail Carriger, Helen Oyeyemi, Cecil Castellucci, Maggie Stiefvater, and a million more.

Because I'm out of shelf space (the horror! the horror!), most of my book purchases are now on the Kindle.  And had you told 13-year-old me that one day, I'd have 700 books in my purse ready to pull out on a moment's notice, I would have told you, "shut up! for real???"
I'm always trying to make 13-year-old me happy.
